13 sts + 20 rows = 4" (10 cm) in Rev St st (p on RS, k on WS) on larger needles.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Loop st K 1, do not slip st off left needle; bring yarn to front between needles; pass yarn over left thumb to make a loop approximately 1¼" tall; bring yarn back between needles; k the same st again and slip off needle; yo; pass 2 sts just worked over yo, locking loop in place.

ssk (slip, slip, knit) Slip the next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to the right needle; insert the left needle into the fronts of these 2 sts and k them tog.

M1 as if to purl (make 1 st as if to purl)  An increase worked by lifting the horizontal thread lying between the needles and placing it onto the left needle. Purl this new stitch through the back loop.

The tunic is worked in Rev St st, so the purl side of the fabric is the RS.

With MC, cast on 68 (74, 81, 87, 94) sts. Work 7 rows in Garter st (k every row). Purl next row. Continue in Rev St st until 30 rows have been completed.
Dec Row (WS): K 1, k2tog, k to last 3 sts, ssk, k 1. Work even for 19 rows. Rep dec row once more – 64 (70, 77, 83, 90) sts. Work even until piece measures 15" from beg, ending with a WS row.
Shape Armhole: Bind off 3 (3, 3, 4, 4) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec Row (RS) P 2, p2tog, p to last 4 sts, p2tog, p 2. Rep dec row on every RS row 6 (7, 8, 8, 9) more times – 44 (48, 53, 57, 62) sts. Work even until armhole measures 8 (8½, 9, 9½, 10)".
Shape Shoulder: Bind off 6 (6, 7, 8, 8) sts at beg of next 4 (2, 2, 4, 2) rows, then bind off 0 (7, 8, 0, 9) sts at beg of next 0 (2, 2, 0, 2) rows. Place rem 20 (22, 23, 25, 28) sts on a holder for Back Neck.

Work same as Back until armhole measures 5½ (6, 6½, 7, 7½)", ending with a WS row.
Shape Shoulder and Neck: P 14 (15, 17, 18, 19), p2tog, p 1, place center 10 (12, 13, 15, 18) sts onto stitch holder, join 2nd skein of yarn, p 1, p2tog, p to end. Working both shoulders at same time, dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 4 more times. When Front Armhole measures same as Back, shape shoulder as for Back.

With CC, cast on 27 (30, 33, 37, 40) sts. Work 1 row in Loop st. Knit 1 row. Repeat last 2 rows 3 more times. Work 1 more row in Loop st. Change to MC, knit 1 row. Work even in Rev St st for 4 more rows
Inc Row (RS): P 1, M1 as if to purl, p to last st, M1 as if to purl, p 1. Rep inc row every 8th row 7 more times –43 (46, 49, 53, 56) sts. Work even until piece measures 19".
Shape Cap: Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec Row (RS) P 2, p2tog, p to last 4 sts, p2tog, p 2. Rep dec row every other row 7 more times. Bind off rem 21 (24, 27, 30, 33) sts.

Sew shoulder seams. With RS facing, CC, and circular needle, k across 20 (22, 23, 25, 28) sts from Back Neck holder, pick up 8 sts from side neck, k across 10 (12, 13, 15, 18) sts from Front Neck holder, pick up 8 sts from side neck – 46 (50, 52, 56, 62) sts. Place marker at beg of rnd and join rnd. Work 1 rnd in Loop st. Purl 1 rnd. Rep last 2 rnds 4 more times. Bind off loosely.
