Garter Yoke Vest

Lion Brand® Chenille Thick & Quick®

8 sts + 12 rows = 4" (10 cm) in stockinette st (k on RS, p on WS) on size 11 (8 mm) needles. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

This vest is worked in one piece from the lower back, over the shoulders and down the front. A single crochet edging is applied to the front band and sleeve edges with crocheted button loops on right front. Where only one figure appears, it applies to all sizes.

With smaller needles, cast on LOOSELY 46 (52, 56) sts. Knit 5 rows in garter stitch. Change to larger needles. Starting with a knit row, work in stockinette stitch until piece measures 15" from beginning, ending having just worked a wrong side row. Armhole Change to smaller needles and begin working in garter st (knit every row), binding off 3 (6, 8) sts at beg of next 2 rows for armholes [40 sts rem]. Continue in garter stitch until armhole measures 9 (9 1/2, 10)". Divide for Fronts Knit 12 (11, 11) sts and put on holder; bind off next 16 (18, 18) sts for neck; knit across last 12 (11, 11) sts.

Knit in garter stitch on these 12 (11, 11) sts until 3 (3 1/2, 3 1/2)" from bound off neck sts. Cast on 8 (9, 9) sts at front edge. Knit in garter stitch until front armhole measures the same as back armhole, and cast on 3 (6, 8) sts at armhole edge. Change to larger needles. Keeping 2 sts in garter stitch at FRONT EDGE throughout, work in stockinette stitch until 11/2" from bottom. Change to smaller needles and work garter stitch for 5 rows. Bind off LOOSELY.

Take sts from holder and join yarn at neck edge. Work right front to correspond to left front, reversing shaping.

Sew side seams. On right front place a marker for button loops right below top edge for first button and 11/2" up from last garter stitch ridge for second button. Front Edge With K hook, join yarn on right side at bottom of right front. Single crochet up front edge to first marker, chain 4 for button loop. Single crochet to second marker and chain 4 for second button loop. Single crochet around neck edge and down the left front. Fasten off. Sleeve Edgings Beginning on right side at lower sleeve opening, single crochet evenly around sleeve edge. Repeat for other sleeve. Fasten off. Sew on buttons.

Garter Yoke Vest Reviewed by Isabel Stone on 2013-01-28 ****
I really like this pattern, but the finished product in the Chenille T&Q was problematical. There were surprising areas of openness (very loose stitches) and it was very heavy to wear. On the plus side, it was very warm, and looked yummy. I used a pin fastening, to avoid buttonholes in this yarn.
