9 sts + 12 rows = 4" (10 cm) over St st. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

Right Twist (RT) Skip first st, k next st and leave on left needle, k first st, remove both sts from left needle.
ssk (slip, slip, knit): Slip the next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to the right needle, insert the left needle into the fronts of these 2 sts and k them tog.
St st (stockinette stitch):
K every rnd.

With circular needle, cast on 52 sts. Join and place marker for beg of rnd, being careful not to twist sts. Working in rnds, knit until piece measures 2 1/2" from beg.
Next Rnd *K2tog, k 5, k2tog, k 4; rep from * around(44 sts). Begin Pattern:
Rnd 1: *K 7, p 1, RT, p 1; rep from * around.
Rnd 2: *K 7, p 1, k 2, p 1; rep from * around.
Rnds 3 & 4 *K 1, p 5, k 1, p 1, k 2, p 1; rep from* around. Rep Rnds 1-4 twice, then work Rnds 1 & 2 once more.

Cozy Cap Reviewed by Peggy Sanders on 2011-10-25 *****
I have knitted five of these hats now to give as gifts and everyone loves them! As another reviewer stated, I also knitted them an inch longer so that the hat can be pulled down over the ears. I plan on making many more hats from this pattern - when I need a hat pattern for a female, this is the one I always go to! It just is a very cute feminine hat(and very warm)!
