Felted Bag

Lion Brand® Monet

18 sts + 24 rows = 4" (10 cm) in St st BEFORE FELTING. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

ssk (slip, slip, knit): Slip the next 2 sts as if to knit, one at a time, to the right needle; insert the left needle into the fronts of these 2 sts and k them tog.

SIDE (make 2)

Cast on 54 sts. Work 8 rows n St st (k on RS, p on WS).
Dec row (RS): Dec 1 st at beg and end of row – 52 sts. Work 7 rows even. Repeat last 8 rows 4 times – 44 sts. Continue to work dec at outer edge every 8 rows as established. AT THE SAME TIME, shape right top as follows:
Row 1 Work 17 sts, turn.
Row 2 (WS) Dec 1 st at inner edge, work across.
Row 3 Work row, dec 1 st at inner edge.
Row 4-7 Repeat Row 3 (end RS).
Row 8 Work even.
Row 9-12 (Repeat Row 3 and 8) twice.
Row 13-14 Work even.
Row 15-22 (Repeat Row 3 once and Row 8 three times) twice.
Row 23 Repeat Row 3, ending RS. Bind off rem 3 sts. Join yarn to make other side: Bind off 8 sts at center then work left top as for right, reversing shaping.

Cast on 36 sts. Working in Garter st (k every row) inc 1 st at beg and end of every other row 5 times – 46 sts. Work 8 rows even. Dec 1 st at beg and end of every other row 5 times – 36 sts. Bind off all sts.

Cast on 16 sts. Working in Garter st, work 1 row.
Next row: Inc 1, work across. Repeat last 2 rows twice – 19 sts. Work 2 rows even.
Buttonhole: K 11, ssk, yo twice, k2tog, k 4.
Next row: K 5, (k 1, p 1] in yo’s, k 12. Work 2 rows even.
Next row: K to last 2 sts, dec 1. Work 1 row even. Repeat last 2 rows 2 times – 16 sts. Bind off all sts.

Cast on 7 sts. Yarn forward, slip 1 st purlwise, yarn back, k across. Repeat until strap measures 48". Bind off all sts.

Sew sides together at side seams. Sew base to bottom. Center flap on one side and sew in place. Felt bag and strap by running through a hot wash cycle with a small amount of detergent. Dry pieces. Steam block into shape - stretching, straightening, and flattening strap if necessary. Sew strap to sides, covering side seams. Sew button under buttonhole.

Downloadable Pattern: Felted Bag Reviewed by Hannah on 2009-01-24 *****
it is a really nice size for if you don't carry a lot of stuff. be careful because the handle easily stretches to be longer than you thought. takes longer than some because felting shrinks it. The colors of the recomended yarn are beautiful. When felted they blend very nicely.
