Image of Miters in Motion

See for yourself why knitting miters is all the rage when you make this exciting throw that can also be worn as a shawl. Simple decreases create the squares. The patchwork technique of adding squares as you go is done by picking up stitches along one side of the square to begin the next one. Watching the beautiful Wool-ease color combinations unfold makes this project hard to put down. The result is a unique shawl, which, when you fold the center corners back, has a built-in collar.

Miters in Motion

Lion Brand® Wool-Ease®

GAUGE:

16 sts and 32 rows (16 ridges)= 4 over garter st (k every row). To insure proper size, be sure to check your gauge.

When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

Making a Gauge Swatch

NOTES:

Each basic square is made up of Black + a Dark Shade and a Light Shade of one color:
G squares (Green squares):
L (Light Green) #130 Green Heather
D (Dark Green) #132 Hunter Green
B(Black)
V squares (Violet squares):
L (Light Violet) #144 Grape Heather
D (Dark Violet) #145 Plum
B(Black)
P squares (Pink squares):
L (Light Pink) #140 Rose Heather
D (Dark Pink) #139 Dark Rose Heather
B(Black)

Each basic square is worked in garter st (k every row) and is constructed in the color/ridge sequence in Diagram A. Two rows of garter st = one ridge. The cast on row (or pick-up row used when joining squares) plus the first WS row form the first ridge. Thereafter, a ridge is formed by knitting one RS row and one WS row. Color changes are always made on RS rows. Each square in Diagram A represents one stitch (horizontally) and one ridge (vertically). Therefore, the first 3 ridges (squares) in Black represent 6 rows. The last st of each square is either fastened off (by cutting yarn and pulling it through the last loop), or by placing the last st on a pin. The instructions will specify which to do. Shawl/Throw is made up of 24 basic squares. Each one is labeled in Diagram B with a letter (according to color) and a number. Diagram B indicates how the piece is constructed together as you work, referring to Side A and Side B of Basic Squares (see Diagram A). Refer to diagrams as you knit.

Basic Square: Cast on 29+1+29 sts (59 sts total). The middle st becomes the of the mitre which is formed by working a double deceease (DD) on every WS row as follows: DD (double decrease): Knit 3 sts together through back loop.

Next row (WS): K28, DD k27, slip last st as if to purl with yarn in front. First ridge has now been formed. Next row (RS): K to last st, slip last st as if to purl with yarn in front. Next row (WS): K27, DD, k26, slip last st as if to purl with yarn in front. Second ridge has now been formed. Repeat last 2 rows in this manner, having one less st on either side of mitre every RS row, and working the DD every WS row. When 3 sts remain, work the RS row as usual and work the WS row as only the DD. Either fasten off last st or put it on a pin (instructions will specify which used). Follow Diagram A for ridge/color sequence.
