GAUGE:

Each rectangular block measures approximately 5 inches x 5 1/2 inches.

BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

BLOCK Note Make 40 with MC and CC1 and 40 with MC and CC2. With CC, ch 4, join with slip st to form a ring. Rnd 1 Ch 4 [counts as first dc and ch-1], (dc in ring, ch 1) 11 times, slip st in 3rd ch of beg ch-4. Fasten off. Rnd 2 Join MC with slip st in last slip st, ch 2, (yo and pull up a loop in first ch-1 space,   yo and pull through 2 loops on hook) twice, yo and pull through all 3 loops on hook (beginning cluster made), ch 2, * (yo and pull up a loop in next ch-1 space, yo and pull through 2 loops on hook) 3 times, yo and pull through all 4 loops on hook (cluster made), ch 2, repeat from * around, slip st in top of beginning cluster. Fasten off. Rnd 3 Join CC with slip st in any ch-2 space, ch 1, sc in same space, * yo, working around and over Rnd 2 ch-2, insert hook in Rnd 1 dc below, pull up a long loop, (yo and pull through 2 loops on hook) twice (long dc made), sc in top of next cluster, sc in next ch-2 space, repeat from * around, end with long dc in last Rnd 1 dc, sc in last cluster, slip st in first sc ñ 36 sts.   Rnd 4 Ch 3 [counts as first dc], (dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in same st, * dc in each of next 7 sts, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next st for corner, dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in each of next 5 sts, hdc in next st, dc in next st *, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next st for corner, repeat from * to * once more, slip st in top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off. Rnd 5 Join MC with slip st in any corner space, ch 1, 3 sc in same space, * sc in each st to next corner space, 3 sc in corner space, repeat from * around, slip st in first sc. Fasten off.

NOTES:

Blocks are rectangular. Make sure all blocks are oriented with long edges at top and
bottom.

FINISHING
Afghan is 8 blocks wide and 10 blocks long. Whipstitch blocks together through both
loops in corresponding sts on adjoining blocks, alternating colors in checkerboard
pattern.

Border: Rnd 1 With RS facing, join MC with slip st in any corner, ch 1, * sc in each st
across to next corner, 3 sc in corner, repeat from * around, slip st in first sc, turn.
Rnd 2 Ch 1, * sc in each st to center corner st, 3 sc in corner st, repeat from * around, slip st in first sc. Fasten off.

Tassels: Make 4

Wrap MC 30 times around 6" piece of  cardboard. Bring a separate double strand of MC
under strands along one edge of cardboard and tie strands tightly together. Cut strands
along opposite edge and remove cardboard. Cut another strand of MC, 36" long, double
it, and wrap tightly around tassel, 11º4" from top. Tie tightly, secure ends, and tuck into
tassel. Trim tassel ends even. Sew a tassel securely to each corner of Afghan.
