knitting in the new Harry Potter
I'm Karen, and I'm the one who brought up the following passage from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince at our meeting last night:
Dumbledore reentered the room [from the bathroom] and Slughorn jumped as through he had forgotten he was in the house.
"Oh, there you are, Albus," he said. "You've been a very long time. Upset stomach?"
"No, I was merely reading the Muggle magazines," said Dumbledore. "I do love knitting patterns."

I am also an obsessed knitter from the New Haven area. I was wondering when your group meets and if other knitters are welcome. Let me know!

For Crocheting, watch the "Firefly" DVDs - in one of the shows River Tam, a character is wearing a crocheted lace vest that even my husband noticed. (I recently taught him how to crochet and he is doing very well, at it, too.) It had popcorns in a star pattern and plenty of detail that I would love to get my hands into. Both knitted and crocheted items appeared often on the show. In the last show "The Message" Jayne, the mercenary of the show, recieves a knitted(crocheted?) hat from his mom that is so brightly colored (with a pom-pom, no less!) that a house elf would blush to wear it ! Everyone is trying NOT to laugh because Jayne is not a nice fellow and may attack without warning if you insult his mom's gift hat. I have seen pics of the upcoming movie and the handmade tradition continues. I would swear one of River's dresses is hand crocheted in the movie, but I can't be sure until I see it on the big screen !

For those people obsessed with knitting, there is a huge need for people to knit blankets for animals in shelters. I knit them for www.bestfriends.com, an animal sanctuary, no-kill shelter in Utah, they can use a variety of sizes, designs, yarns, etc. I buy yarn at the thrift shop and usually just knit the easiest design, either all knit or line of knit, line of purl. Just a thought...

We meet from 7 to 9 p.m. every Wednesday at Au Bon Pain on the corner of Broadway & York St. in New Haven, Connecticut, and every Thursday at Panera, exit 9 off I-91 in North Haven (in the same plaza as Target & Michael's). All ages & skill levels who do any portable craft are welcome.
Sometimes we bring a swift and ball-winder to Panera -- that always attracts attention. And sometimes passersby and tourists take our picture at Au Bon Pain. (We sit in front of a big plate-glass window.)

Just wondering; do English magazines have knitting patterns in them??

There are plenty of knitting magazines in the UK, just as there are in North America.
