Another Thursday in CT...

Finally, a cool night to be knitting! I forgot to take a picture but one of our regulars just finished half a shrug made from a woodsy variegated shade of Wool-Ease. I will have to snap one next time because the cabling was beautiful!

I think Wool-ease is great, especially for kids, because it is so easy to take care of. When all the blogging rage was making Harry Potter sweaters last year, one of our other regulars substituted using regular wool for Wool-Ease and got fabulous results, as you can see here:

It just so happens that the goldenrod shade (Gold 171) is the PERFECT Griffyndor gold. She used Denim 114 for the girl's sweater and Chestnut Heather 179 for the boy's (which makes a great Griffyndor burgundy, as you can see).

The pattern used is from Knit It!'s 2004 issue. She took the Animal Pullover pattern and just didn't do the charts, subbing a chart she made for the letters...and voila!

PLEASE PLEASE! If you have a crochet pattern for a ladies shrug, I would appreciate it! These are in style, ladies are asking for them, and I cant come up with a pattern!

Natalie (and anyone else who's interested), see my August 12, 2005, post entitled "KIP (knit in public)" -- I've included links to places to look for a knitting/crochet group near you. If you can't find one, start your own!

BEAUTIFUL!! One of my very first knitting projects was a Griffyndor scarf- I have seen patterns for the Weasly sweaters, but haven't the courage to attempt them yet. These are great!!

Love the Weasley sweaters too! Is that pattern from "Knit It" still on the Lionbrand website? I'll have to try it. My son Colion would love it, perhaps I could get it done by the next movie release! Tomorrow I pick up some Wool-ease! Thanks!

Liz:

Actually, the pattern was in the magazine itself and it is apparently sold out (though maybe you can find one on eBay?)

But, that's okay -- just take any basic sweater pattern that will fit your son and place the letter where you like. You can either knit it "into" the sweater using the method called intarsia or you can put the letter on after the sweater is done using duplicate stitch. In the picture posted, the "Z" sweater is done in intarsia and the "A" is duplicate stitch.

One pattern you can base your sweater off of is: http://freeknittingpatterns.lionbrand.com/patterns/kwe-cssweater.html - just leave out all the sheep charts and do it all in one color. :-)

I just have to correct myself, my son's name is Colin not Colion, silly me I think I have "Lionbrand" on the brain(io's follow all of L's)! Thanks Adina, I'll take a look at it. Duplicate stitch would be easiest for me.

Whenever I use lion brand chenille on a scarve I get long loops, doing k 3, p3..was wondering what other pattern i can use to avoid these loops.

Also on the homespun yarn, it curls up on the main string and i have to keep pulling it down as i go along....does anyone has these 2 problems. too bad i live on long island otherwise i would join your group....thank you, cathy

Just finished a VERY simple and way cool shrug that was knit but could easily be converted to crochet -- I got the pattern from www.mangomoonyarns.com - meant to be done with two strands of yarn held together, they were selling their recycled silk and a ribbon yarn. I used some stash up: a strand of light weight purple boucle and a strand of Homespun Corinthian...on size 11's and 13's it knit up fast.

It took about 4 days and was a charge - basically a very long 12 or 14 inch wide strip of stockinette stitch sewn up along the underarms and then another strip maybe 8" wide of garter stitch sewn into a circle to fit around the 21" stretch between the sewn-up sleeves. Looked like a sweater for those with no heads, but once she saw it on, my 30-something neighbor demanded one too.

So I am in the shrug business for now. Will post a photo when I get the neighbor's finished.
