This pattern took me 8 months of knitting at night after work- What a masterpiece! I did expand the length to accomodate my tall husband-- he wanted it to tuck under his feet and up to his chin! I constructed it from Vanna's Choice and backed it with fleece in order to have a clean back side-- When this is spread out it is an amazing pattern-- stairs, six pointed stars, and ever changing-- after you understand how the pattern develops, it is relatively easy to produce. It was worth every stitch to knit this afgan. My husband has confiscated it for his side of the bed! But before he did that I made him keep it in the living room for a few months so I could admire my handiwork while I was finishing another project. One word of warning-- make sure you carry the new color UNDER the previous color to prevent holes in your work.

I made this a few years ago using alpaca double stranded so I could get the number of colors needed. It is yummy and all my kids and grandkids love o snuggle in it.

Over 40 Years ago my Mother made this exact afghan out of scraps of wool she had from previous project. There wasn't anything she couldn't knit or crochet and it always was perfect, she was a perfectionist for sure. I had that afghan for MANY years and remember how heavy and warm it was. SO , I am very happy to see this pattern again, so I can make one for my kids. THANK YOU

I know it looks complicated, but I knit this afghan after one year of knitting experience. It is not a take-along project, and you have to be willing to learn new knitting skills such as using bobbins and reading a pattern, and I had to be willing to "un-knit" quite a few times, but after you get the rhythm of the pattern it is a project you will be proud of!
