I haven't finished yet, so I am not sure how it will all fit together, but I do want to strongly advise using a 16" circular needle instead of long regular needles. Size 3 needles are very small for this weight of yarn, and the stitches are very tight, so I actually bent one of my needles slightly in several places before I switched.

After nearly completing this, I am downgrading my review because it is far from easy unless you have experience knitting stuffed animals. Knitting the pieces was no problem (except for the nose, which I gave up on and embroidered instead), but the assembly instructions are often difficult to understand, and there is no guidance regarding placement of the pieces. There are also terms like "oversew" that are not defined, either in the pattern or on the LB website. Especially annoying was the tendency to increase and decrease at the edges of the piece, instead of 1 o 2 stitches in, making sewing 2 pieces together more difficult.

It did come out very cute, but it was a lot of work and I don't think I would attempt it again.

I am an Australian grazier running cattle and goats with 2 border collies of my own. The muzzle in the pattern is a little short, so I am going to try and add an extra 6-8 rows with no decrease, in between the first lot of decrease on the muzzle area and the second. I think this will make it more like the real dog. Other than that, I think it's really cute! When I am done I will post a photo of it.

I really enjoyed making this dog see Gallery.the instructions are clear and at the finale the pieces really went together very well.To other knitters i would say just do what the pattern says. Thankyou.

This made a very cute toy, but from the extreme awkwardness of working the head shaping on straight needles, I was forced to conclude that this pattern was originally worked in the round, and was later translated to be worked flat.
The high number of increases on the back of the head actually caused a good deal of hand cramping. If I make another toy like this I will be re-designing it to be worked on double-point needles in the round.

I'm shocked by the previous negative review! This pattern looks just like a very cute Border Collie which are often used for sheepherding. Unfortunately, since I crochet but don't knit I can't make it. I hope somebody else does so we can have a REAL review of the pattern.

It looks like a CAT not a dog at all. And yes there is an AKC "herding" group, however it is not only comprised of "sheepdogs", there are many other breeds in this group.

Since it looks like a cat, I am not even going to bother with it or the book, and I was considering the book, I love farm animals and have small nieces who love hand knit gifts.
