Fireworks Hat Reviewed by Kathy Anneken on 2015-11-14 ****
First of all, I love the Hometown yarn. I did have trouble with the circumference sizing (my gauge was accurate) for 12 mos. So, I cast on 38 stitches for l8" circumference. Add I started to decrease at 6 1/2". I knit an extra inch for a rib cuff and stockinette stitching. It all turned out super cute, very easy to knit and top it off with a pom=pom. thanks Lion brand, another go-to pattern.

I just finished making this hat, with a few changes.

1) I used Oklahoma City Green and San Diego Navy in a stripe pattern.
2) I knitted this in the round.
3) I used a stockinette stitch instead of garter stitch.

I made this hat in the largest size to fit my 18-month-old twin boys (their heads are a little on the large side and I'd like this to fit them through the winter).

It's a very cute hat, but the length of the hat is WAY off. The circumference is perfect as written. However, unless you want this hat to cover their entire head and face, down to their chin, then knitting to an 8 inch length before beginning decreases is way, way too long. After finishing the hat (without fully knotting off the last round), I tried it on both of my boys, and it was way too long on both of them. So, I ended up unraveling the decreases and then maybe another two or so inches of length total.

At that point, I didn't really feel like doing the decreases again (and the length looked right), so I just tied it off at that point. The decreases might've made it a little bit tidier, but there are so few decrease rows that I don't know that it makes much difference overall.

I was thinking that I'd like to make two, one for each boy, but I'm not sure the end result was all that exciting. The pompon is cute, but I haven't decided if I want to add it yet.

Lastly, this is a really, REALLY thick hat! Great for winter, but it makes a very stiff, very dense fabric.

Very easy and fast to make. I got it done in one evening. I think that instead of the pompon I will attach a little flower to the hat.

I made this hat in the smallest size with Homespun yarn. It was so quick, I got it done in 2 hours!!! I made a pom pom for the top but you could just as easily add a row of eyelets at the bottom and thread a ribbon through or attach a knitted flower. Super cute and PERFECT for that last minute gift. I will be making many more of these!

Finished this cute little hat in one evening. But it took less then one skein of Jiffy, even with the pompom.

It will be a perfect fit for a 4-6 month old, I believe.

I plan to experiment with different yarns and needle sizes.

I expect to make many of these
