One-Skein Hat Reviewed by Kirstie Reeves on 2010-11-16 *****
I have been cocheting since I was 5 years old and just recently taught myself how to knit. This hat was VERY simple to make.. My advice is to make the hat 10-12inches instead of 8 1/2 (unless you don't what the fold over, then 8inches works perfectly for that.

This is a quick and easy hat and scarf, and a great pattern for the learning knitter. But the fit is large, and without any sort of ribbing, it does stretch out quite a bit after wearing. Also, as another reviewer noted, the length does not allow for much to roll up. I made mine 10 inches long and just got enough to length to roll up the edge about 2 inches and leave a bit of the boxy finish at the top. Because I like how quickly this knits up, though, I'm going to make another. This time I'll add ribbing to prevent that "stretched-out" fit, and I will make it longer as I like the slouchy look of the hat versus a close-fit.

If you are a beginner, this is a good pattern to start with. If you have a bit more experience, I think it's a pattern that you can easily modify. And, of course, the yarn is fun to work with!

I wanted a quick and easy scarf to knit for my grandma and wanted to use up some Homespun yarn I had. A few changes I would recommend: 1) Make this at LEAST 9 1/2 inches. I made mine 8 1/2 and there is not enough to fold over. 2) I put in a 2x2 ribbing at the bottom, and 3) rather than finishing the top the way they suggested, I wove yarn in and out around the circumference at the top in a drawstring fashion. It finished off the top with no funny corners and rounded the hat off nicely.

This review is for the hat, not the scarf. The pattern is quick and easy to make, it took me about 3 hours while I was watching movies (so my full attention was not devoted to it). My only complaint would be that this looks slightly nerdy! I added a little pom pom on top just to try to help not make the top look so goofy. Overall though its a quick and easy project and would do the trick to keep your head warm :)

LOVE IT! Reviewed by Kimberly Dickson on 2008-02-15 *****
It is a great beginner project that looks really nice when it is complete. It really helped me to learn how to hold everything and my tension.

When I was first starting to knit I made these for my entire family as gifts. It works up really quick and inexpensive.

I even took and used thinner yarn and made a little one of the family pet.
