Recruiting others to kint!

I would love to say this was my project, however I only am peripherally involved.

My 82 year old mother does not crochet or knit. She is (and has always been) very active in volunteering with many organizations and even received a Senior Volunteer award from Westchester County New York. She recently moved into a senior retirement complex and was bothered by how many of the residents just sat around doing nothing.

So, she found someone at church who was involved with a project to make knit and crocheted hats for preemies and newborns in local hospitals and babies born to women in the local prison.

Mother has recruited a crew of women in the home who are now knitting away and loving it.

I am involved because I have started to supply them with yarn. I can't honestly say what brands of yarn have been used at this point, since a friend and I have been supplying them with leftover yarn we had on hand (I belong to the 'club' of women who are trying to see who has the most yarn when they die).

I know Mother also has a local yarn store involved, too. They are using baby yarn, and the hats are truly adorable. My mother and father live in New York, so I have been mailing yarn to her for several months, and I don't seem to be able to keep up with the demand. I think this project is definitely noteworthy because it is serving the needs of two groups of individuals: the elderly knitters now have a purpose in life, and the babies in the hospitals are getting the lovely caps.

Mother said one of her knitters is so happy to be busy that she is making two at a time and switches back and forth between them for a change of pace.
