Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

chemo caps

I love to crochet for others, and have been making prayer shawls for SPLC for a couple of years. They approached me early this spring and asked me to make chemo caps to be donated to the local Hospice. It's a perfect project to do through out the warm months, since there isn't any heavy material to have in your lap or carry about. A simple crochet hook, and 2 skeins of yarn, and you are good to go. I chose the Natural Easy Stripes Hat from Lion Brand (70732AD) as the pattern, and have used Vanna's Choice and other soft, light weight yarns for this project. I switch hooks, depending on the weight of the yarn, keeping in mind that these caps are for people who have most likely lost their hair.
It has been fun to change up the pattern by adding color and sometimes using varigated yarns or adding a 3rd color to the mix.
So far I have made over 3 dozen caps since the middle of May. I have posted a few so you can see them. To see more of them you can visit my blog at
Contact your local Hospice, nursing homes, or church to find out where to donate your projects.
