Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

Skeins of Hope

I am a member of our school district's "Yarn and Yak" group in Branchburg, New Jersey. Our group has crocheted and knitted many afghans/lap throws/prayer shawls for cancer survivors, people in Veterans' hospitals, and children in pediatric centers. Everything was well received. Many people were brought to tears. This was spear-headed by our school nurse, Mary Caputo. Our Lion Brand yarns were many, usually hand-picked by one individual so that the colors were coordinated and volunteers just grabbed a skein at the office with directions for size of squares. Eventually we would gather at someone's home and assemble our new afghans. This group usually makes 5 - 7 afghans a year plus several lap throws or prayer shawls.

I have begun a new group called "Skeins of Hope" through our little Reformed Church in Hillsborough, New Jersey. We are a group of novice and experienced crocheters who are creating our first ever afghan to be auctioned off in October with the proceeds to go to one of our missions, Habitat for Humanity. Even teenagers have joined in, including my own daughter. We find our gatherings to be a wonderful time of laughter and Christian fellowship.
