My Mitten Project

Nine years ago, I was teaching in a first grade classroom. It was a small school and there were only 4 students in my class. One little boy forgot his mittens and school rules said he couldn't go outdoors until he had mittens. I knit a pair that afternoon. With four students in the room, I couldn't leave my other three out, so I made mittens for them too. Then there was a small kindergarten class, about 9 kids, so I made mittens for them. Then the 9 second graders wanted mittens, and before I knew it, I'd made mittens for the whole school. I liked the feeling and did it again the next year, and also for the first grade at a neighboring school. I kept adding mittens and last year I knit 500 pair of mittens and donated them to local schools. This year, if I knit 700 pair, I will have donated over 3,000 mittens in the years of doing this project. I read a story to the children and then lay about 50 pair of mittens on a table and let them chose their mittens.

I use mostly donated yarn - the habit got very expensive. My goal of 2 pair of mittens a day takes a lot of yarn.
I would tell other knitters to start in their own back yard. When searching for a chairity, remember local schools need help.

The Elkader newspaper and Cedar Rapids Gazette both did articles on me in past years. My work doesn't affect a lot of people really, but it warms my heart to see children wear hand knit mittens.
