Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

Head Start Carter St. School Inverness, Fl

Thirty pre-school youngsters attend the government funded Head Start program in Inverness, Fl. Three years ago we started knitting ear warmers for each youngster. I got the pattern from your website. It is the 14 row, 40 stitch, size 11 needles pattern with double yarn for 4 rows, single yarn for 6 then double for the last four.
We are in central Florida and it does get cool in the winter time. So these items were welcome.

We give them out at Christmas along with toys and educational supplies. This year the children were featured in the local monthly newspaper. They looked so cute putting on the ear warmers!

We are now adding finger puppets. Our goal is to have 90 ready to distribute after doing a puppet show with the children. Each child will receive 3. However, with lots of help from the Citrus Hills Women's Club we may hit 4 each. Even my 8 and 10 year old grandchildren are knitting them. We have made animals, Santas, snowmen, ghosts, Despicable Me forms and "wild" things.

In addition to knitting we hope to add a purchased sweat suit for each child and a tied fleece blanket.
