Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

Southern Oklahoma Caps for Cancer Support Group

I am Vickie Herron Luster. My sister Helen Herron Fagbengle developed and died from breast cancer in Dec. 1989. Our older sister Marie Herron Niblett thought that a way to donor our sister Helen would be be make and give away FREE....caps for cancer patients.

We started Southern Oklahoma Caps for Cancer Support Group in 2002 in Helen's memory.

We accept donations of "new" yarn to crochet and knit hats and caps for cancer patients. We also accept donations of cotton material for "dew-rags" "lap robes" and "scarfs" for the summer months.

All material is donated; all items are made by volunteers and everything is donated FREE to cancer patients.

Our group has supplied 4,000 items in 3 years to patients in Ardmore, McAlester, Ponca City, Lawton and Ada, Oklahoma and childrens cancer treatment hospitals in Tulsa and Oklahoma City, OK; also to anyone that we know of personally or who might contact us.

We share our patterns with anyone willing to assist our group.

We even have a 4-H fabric club in Johnston County, Oklahoma who has taken this project on, as well as the various chapters of the Oklahoma Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

Caring and Sharing.......our love to each person who is affected by cancer.

Remember....there are people....babies, children, youth and adult who need an "up-lifting" during this time in their lives. A brightly colored hat, caps or lap robe makes a person feeling that someone cares.

The area and state newspapers have published stories about our group and a Oklahoma-Texas television station ran a story about our group.
