Bags for Kids -something to call their own

My daughter workds for CPS ( Child Protective Services )in a county in NY. When a child is removed from their home, they usually leave with very little or nothing at all. A co worker who makes these bags for children in my local area inspired me to do this for my daughter to share where she works. I don't sew so I have a friend make me some draw string bags made from pretty fabric and inside each bag I try to include a teddy bear, Pillow case, pajama's or a tee shirt , puzzle books etc -I group them off in ages.
Winter time I knit hats for the older boys and girls with the homespun and for the newborns and infants I just started with Jamie.
Homespun I am finding out is not cost efficient so I will have to explore to see what else I can use that will look nice and have pretty colors.
My daughter says when a child is removed and they get handed one of these bags it makes their eyes light up that they are getting something they can hold on to that is their own in strange surroundings.

Any suggestions for other inexpensive yarn that would be good for knitting hats?

Best Regards
