Knitting for Mary's Place

The residents of Ballinger Court in Edmonds, WA, wanted to find a charity for whom to make things. We chose Mary's Place in downtown Seattle which cares for homeless and formerly homeless women and their children. It is the only shelter in Seattle that welcomes children. There are 6 to 10 women involved in our group. Some of hand knit items; others enjoy loom knitting. Last September we donated 5 large bags of hats, scarves and mittens. Our donations came just in time. Mary's Place was checking their storage area for winter items and found very little.

We are in the process of making more items, including things for children. We will accumulate them, have a show for our other residents and then donate our work.

We are looking at another charity in Lynnwood, WA, that supplies clothing to school age children. They need clothing for kindergarten to high school age. This will be a good test of our skills.

We use donated yarn plus some that we find at thrift stores and rummage sales. Sometimes we are forced to purchase yarn to get the texture and color we want for our project. This gives us a chance to try things out. Lots of fun and we know the product is appreciated.

Gail B.
