Caring and Sharing

Mitten Tree

I work at the Webster Public Library in Webster, New York. Every year we put up a "Mitten Tree" across from our Reference desk. We place a note on the tree asking for any new items...mittens, gloves, scarves, socks, etc. There is a wonderful group of people who knit in our library once a week. They always support the tree. I try and get started right after Christmas so when the tree goes up after Thanksgiving the next year, it has "seed" items. You know the ones that make others grow onto the tree.

We have given to many places over the years but the last two years we give to our own Community Chest. They make baskets for needy families in the area every Christmas and hand out food. They place all the handmade items out for people to go through and take for their families when picking up their basket!

This year has been especially cold and sad as it was the first anniversary of the shooting of four of our Volunteer Firemen on Christmas Eve 2012. It sure did my heart good to have something positive to strive for.
