Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

Dear Dana

My daughter, Dana, died 13 years ago from Leukemia at the age of 15. We spent many many days at Children's Hospital in Denver battling Leukemia and watching her with tears enduring the barbaric rigors of chemotherapy. Dana's last chance of survival was a bone marrow transplant which we traveled to Milwaukee for. Unfortunately, this did not work and after two and a half years of fighting she died at Childrens. My family and i were always so grateful for the gifts that were donated to Dana and other patients. It was a wonderful distraction for all the kids. It finally came to me one night how I needed to keep Dana's spirit alive and bring smiles to people going through what Dana endured.
I started "Dear Dana" two years ago after acquiring a passion for spinning and knitting. I learned how to spin, then thought, what am i going to do with all of the yarn? I went to a local yarn shop and improved my pattern and knitting skills. Before I knew it I was knitting hats, then scarves, then shawls (my favorite yarn for shawls is Lion Brand Home Spun). I put flyers out asking for knitters and crocheters to make hats, scarves and shawls for Oncology patients. The response is overwhelming. I have delivered over 300 to Hospitals and Cancer treatment centers in Denver so far. I still need more handmade hats, scarves and shawls. When I find more time to travel, I will have a supply of hats and scarves to deliver in every city I visit.
As "Dear Dana" grows, my dream is to have chapters all over the U.S. I want everyone to know the name "Dear Dana". It has taken years to figure out how to do something more for Dana, deal with grief, and bring smiles to as many oncology patients as I possibly can. So full speed ahead!!!!
