Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

Prayer Shawl Apostolate

Loving Stitches has been in operation for the last 6 years in Dawsonville, Georgia. We are a group of about 20 women who meet once a week to knit, crochet, and needlework on shawls, blankets, laprobes, adult hats, preemie caps, dishcloths and potholders. Our priest says he loves to hear the joy expressed through our prayers and laughter that fill the hallways of our small church.

We have been blessed with members who are caring and understanding, and enjoy making the lives of members of our church community and their friends and families richer through our efforts. Many people are dealing with the ravages of cancer. Our Lion Brand Homespun crocheted and knitted prayer shawls and laprobes not only let them know that they are loved and prayed for, but provide a warm hug for them during their personal prayers.

We provide a baby blanket and cap for each newborn as they are welcomed into our church. We also knit caps for a son of one of our members who is the doctor in charge of a hospital neo-natal care center. These little ones are in dire need of having their little heads kept warm, and we are happy to fulfill that need.

There are also little ones and adults at the hospital who are battling cancer, and because therapy causes hair loss, their need is also met by our Loving Stitchers. Using the Jamie pattern (we call it the "smiley" pattern) we crochet baby blankets for the hospital's babies in need.

We are proud to have in our group two great-grandmothers. One is 80 and a whiz at crocheting Homespun prayer shawls, while the other is 90 and has knitted over 100 balaclavas for our country's military personnel.

At Thanksgiving and Christmas each year, we assist in providing meals for some of our local residents. Loving Stitches is proud to utilize Lion Brand Kitchen Cotton to provide dishcloths and pot holders to go along with the holiday meals provided by all our church members.

Personally, one of the greatest joys of my life is meeting with these women each week. These sessions provide therapy for my hands in knitting and crocheting, and therapy for my soul as we chat and pray during our work.

Many thanks to Lion Brand for the wonderful yarns they continue to provide to the crafting community.

With deepest gratitude, Georgina Riedinger, Loving Stitches Member
