Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

Internet-Based Charity Crafting

First, I became involved in this charity after one of my cousin's gave birth to a premature infant son. It was virtually impossible to find clothes to fit that little two pound baby. And the family was concerned that their son would pass away without anything nice to be laid to rest in.

In my quest to find clothes for this baby, I stumbled upon All Crafts 4 Charity, or AC4C for short. I realized that here was hundreds of people who knit, crochet, sew, tat and smock to provide clothing to premature infants.

Some of the clothing is for hospital use, things such as hats, booties, blankies and diaper shirts. Some clothing is given as gifts to the parents who take home a tiny baby, these include booties, hats, onesies, two piece outfits, blankies, and so much more.

And, sadly some of our creations are used for "blessings" of the babies in the hospital, the babies who won't go home. It provides the family with something nice to hold their infant in, have pictures taken, and even lay their angel to rest in.

The blessing and burial layettes include: a gown or romper, a bonnet, a blankie, and a toy. Sometimes they also include booties. These items are made to fit "angels" ranging in size from a small hand held flashlight to a newborn. We ask volunteers make the items, some of us knit or crochet and some of us sew, but all for the same cause.

Every month, we have two projects, two places where our creations are sent. Our volunteers span this country and other's, to actually assess how many people we have helped would be impossible. To assess how much gets sent to each month's projects would be impossible, potentially hundreds of thousands have been helped over the years that AC4C has been active.

We realize that this is a mission that none of us could accomplish alone because the need is so great, but, with each one doing what they can with the talent they have, we can make great progress in making this world a better place, making lives better, and easing pain for other people.

Currently, I don't knit or crochet, I'm desiring to learn. But, I sew for this charity. And it deserves mention. The work that they do is amazing, I've seen so many knitted and crocheted items that I know some parent would be honored to place their infant in. We all "meet" on a Yahoo Groups site titled All Crafts 4 Charity. There we talk about what we are doing, who needs what and for what hospital, because we help a lot of hospitals. Inside of AC4C, there are other smaller charities, such charities as Care Wear, Caring for Cooper, Angel Stitches, and so many more.

I've realized through this group that there is still some good in this world. And I'm honored to say that I'm a member.
