Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

Afghans for the Homeless

I started by wanting to teach others to knit and asked the members of our church, the United Church of Christ in Deer Park, Ohio, to donate unused skeins of yarn to the Warm Up America project. About 16 ladies and one teen-aged boy, who had learned to crochet in school, signed up to knit or crochet. As always not everyone contributed, but in 3 years, 64 afghans have been donated to Bethany House on Fairmount Ave in Cincinnati. It is a home for homeless women and their children, where they are housed and trained in more successful living patterns and how to find a job, and even receive training in some jobs. It is a wonderful program.

Our project really took off when our church took part in PURPOSE DRIVEN LIFE, a book by Rick Warren which helps readers to live a life full of purpose. At the end of the study of the book, each of us found a charity or way in which we passed the love of Christ on to others, and 12 ladies signed up to learn or to teach knitting and crocheting for our group.

Another way our program grew was through a gift of yarn given to us by the owner of a yarn store that went out of business. When we arranged the yarn to store---we looked like a real yarn store! We had hundreds of colors and full skeins!

We use Lion Brand, polyester, 4 ply and love the soft feel and easy handling.

Our group has benefitted 64 families, as we try to furnish one afghan to each family as they come into the home.
As we knit and crochet, we think of the family who will have a happy memory of their stay at Bethany House.
No local media has reported on our project.
