MERCI

MERCI is a non-profit school for the mentally and physically disabled. They offer continued education, afterschool and extended day care and a 7 bedroom group home. They work on assisting individuals to be a part of the community, self-care, job training. I became involved with this wonderful organiztion because I am a single parent and with Downs Syndrome child and needed a facility for the extended day care. Having a child with a disability has enlightened my eyes with the lack of good programs for them and the somewhat prejudice of society. Organizations such as this seem to get the short end the stick or are the very last with any state funding assistance and donations. In many ways I am grateful for my son because he has made me to see through his eyes and be a better person.

Through the years I got involved in the parent support group that works on fundraisers for the school and the group home. When the group home was completed I volunteered to make afghans for each of the clients bedrooms as a welcome gift and to make the room more cozy. I chose to work with LB Homespun due to its softness. The gifts were a great success, that I now do extra afghans about 6 or more and we auction them off at the main Christmas fundraiser known as Trees of Enchantment. All of the proceeds go to offset school and group home cost. I have donated all of the yarn with a few kind people sending me some skeins of left over every now and then to help the offset of cost but every penny counts for this group.

I am so grateful for this organization knowing my son is in a well-cared and safe enviroment and that his schooling is continueing to help him in this world. I have noticed that at some of our meetings some of the other members have picked up knitting and crocheting and are making things for the fundraiser. Because I love to knit and crochet, I don't know how much time I have put into but I don't see it that way. I enjoy knowing others are benefiting and enjoying these items and it is a very warm fuzzy feeling to see a client snuggled in the afghan smiling.

Thank you for letting me share my little story.

Sorry I don't have any pictures at this time.
