Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

Knitting the Community Together

Our group, one of the activities of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Branch Library of Aurora, Colorado, was the brain child of Paula Kent, the Branch Librarian. Paula is one of those amazing knitters who knits without a pattern, and loves to share her love of knitting with everyone. Because we are a multicultural community, Paula's idea was to unite the community through the scommon love of knitting.

The group meets on Wednesdays, from 11 to 1 over the lunch hour. We have both beginning and advanced knitters. Yar and needles are supplied, if needed, and instruction is the casula kind. It is easy to get over the language barrier when everyone is at a different level, and everyoneuses a different knitting technique. Friends are knit together as garments are knit, taken apart, knit again and stored for our favorite charity, the Colfax Connection. The Colfax Connection assists families who live in the motels that line Colfax Avenue in Aurora, an area that is under redevelopment as a part of urban renewal. These families would be homeless if not for the monthly rental of motel rooms.

The group produces around 70-100 youth garments a year, and are distributed at the annual Christmas party, as well as when requested for a specific need.

We had listed the group and its need for yarn and needles on the Lion Brand website some months ago, thinking we might attract knitters in the Denver metro area, and get a few small donations for the group. Imagaine our surprise when a VERY large carton came from Maryland, chock full of Lion Brand yarn for our efforts. The box came anonymously with a note hoping that our efforts would be blessed by God-and it cost $120 to mail! Our knowledge of the generosity of other knitters has been reinforced!

We are so grateful-and the yarn is now being used for our projects!
