Street people Scarfs

One Sunday at a new church I attended a gentleman got up and talked about delivering gift packages to people living on the street in Vancouver, Wa and Portland, Or. My bowling partner was a member of this organization and mentioned a benefit sale they do to raise money for feeding the less fortunate. I asked her if she would like some of the scarfs to sell. She took all twenty and sold most all so last year I started knitting in January. She mentioned that they also put together 100 packages to go to the street people. I asked if she would like scarfs and hats for their packets. When they came to pick them up in November I had over 200 items for them. I also knew of a group called Yellow Brick Road and this is teenagers that live on the streets and I hope to donate to them also.
My neighbor saw me knitting on a camping vacation and she said she also knits and I told her about my venture. We now get together every Friday evening to share patterns etc. We use all kinds of yarn, colors, patterns etc. I have made a notebook of your free patterns. This project has been catchy as another gal at camping said she knits and a neighbor down the street also knits.
We just got a request from a classic car club for chemo caps to sell for Children's Cancer Association and the Susan Koman breast cancer at our local hospitals. Now we have changed to hats for the June car show. We knit each and every day and enjoy the fact that someone will be a little warmer with our knitting.
We both watch for yarn sales to keep the cost down and mostly make the scarfs for around $5 each but then we see some more expensive yarn and just have to have it for our street friends. I would love to see a street person wearing a beautiful scarf and hat some day.
