The Chemo Cap Hat Tree

1) A few years ago I read an article in an Optomist magazine telling about people donating hats to the local Children's Oncology Hospital for the kids with cancer to use when their hair falls out from the chemo. treatments. I called our local Children's hospital to see if I could donate some hats to them but they had no idea what I was talking about. I decided to help them with a "Hat Tree" where the children could pick a hat from the tree after their chemo. treatments.

2) After providing over 500 hats to the hospital in the first 3 months of the trees' existance, I decided I needed some help with this project. I went to local churches and knitting clubs and asked for their help in making hats for the kids. I also spoke before sewing clubs, schools, and anywhere I could to see if people would donate hats. Recently a local Boy Scout Troop helped to collect hats and yarn so one of the scouts could earn his Eagle Scout badge. Many times local church groups, Girl Scout Troops, etc. are looking for a charitable project. To knit or crochet a hat does not require tremendous time or exceptional skills but it provides a great benefit to the chemo kids. A chemo hat pattern is easy to do so even beginning knitters can produce a hat for the kids. The girls especially love the ones made out of the Fun Fur. It is marvelous to see what creative people can do with various yarns and scraps of yarn.

3) I was fortunate enough to receive a "7 Everyday Hero" award from our local TV station. This coverage also helped to get other people inspired to knit, sew, or crochet hats.

4) I hope to be able to make presentations to local Assisted Living facilities that have knit and crochet clubs for their residents so they too can work on a charitable project.

5) Just having seen the smile on one of the kids faces when they pick a hat from the tree has been incredible and I believe it would be a wonderful project many of your customers could provide for their local hospitals.

6) Some of the local knit shops have been wonderful about donating a free skein of yarn if you use the yarn to make a hat for chemo patients.

7) We have a knit club at our local Rec. Center and I have made some knitted hats from the Fun Fur and gotten several women interested in making these for the kids. As I said before, even beginning knitters like to see the finished hat they make and any mistakes are easily hidden in this wonderful yarn.

Thank you for your great Web site and your wonderful yarn, it has truly given a new dimension to the hats we can provide for the kids.
