Hats for Cancer Patients

Six years ago, I had major surgery. In the blood tests done prior to surgery, it was discovered that I had early stage chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Although the most common form of leukemia in adults, CLL is not treated until it's stage 2 or 3. For 4 1/2 years, I watched my blood counts deteriorate, until finally treatment began.

One day at the treatment center, a volunteer was giving out hats made by The Get Well Gang. Looking up their web site, I found patterns they recommended, got the yarn and began to crochet. There was no need to register with the group, just take the hats to the hospital, along with the gift card available from The Get Well Gang's web site.

It's reached a point where I can't sit in front of the TV without having a hat to crochet, and about 15 went in last winter. About 6 more are ready to go.

It really makes me feel good to be helping another cancer patient, and when I see someone wearing one of the hats I made, my day is made even brighter.
