Hats for Israeli Soldiers

Dear Blumenthal Family,

I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but you've been helping to warm the heads and hearts of Israeli soldiers since the winter of 2008. That winter, my son was serving as a paratrooper in the IDF and stationed on the Hermon for the winter. It was a cold winter, and they were often buried under several feet of snow. My knitting group in Gush Etzion (south of Jerusalem) wanted to do some charity knitting and we resolved to make ten hats for his unit. Well. We had no idea. The soldiers were delighted with their hats...but there were many, many more soldiers serving up there and soon I began to get requests for more hats.

I soon realized that me and my little knitting group wouldn't be able to keep up with the demand so I put a few feelers out online and BOOM! The hats started pouring in from around the world. They were all made according to a simple pattern I'd written up, and I mentioned some yarns that could be used, including Lion Brand Wool-Ease. People began to form groups abroad and some of them even turned to you directly for yarn donations, to which you responded generously.

Since the project started, I have received about a hundred hats a week in the mail or by personal delivery, which I then distribute to soldiers serving in combat duty, with a special emphasis on "lone soldiers" (soldiers without family in Israel). We're talking 5000 hats a year or about 30,000 handmade hats since this started six years ago.

I have many pictures and have been reported on in many newspapers. To get a taste, I refer you to my (infrequently updated) blog,
I realize that this may be seen as too political a cause to feature on your site, but in any case when I saw your request for stories of charity knitting, I realized that I really owe you a big thank you and wanted to express my gratitude. Thanks for being a part of this!
