Common Threads at St. Paul's Episcopal Church

I go to church with a wonderful woman, Melissa Eelman, who is the most spectacular seamstress. We attend St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Newnan, GA. At our ministry fair last fall, Melissa was starting a Prayer Shawl Knitting Ministry for those interested in knitting or crocheting prayer shawls. I have been knitting on and off for about 15 years but had gotten away from it in the last 8 years or so. I jumped at the chance to start it again for such a wonderful cause. We named our group Common Threads because we ended up with not only several people who knit, but one wonderful woman, Pat, who cross-stitches pillowcases, another woman, Kathy, who is our only crocheter so far, and several of the teens in the church who are turning out to be very proficient knitters. We have knit shawls for women who have lost husbands, women who have lost parents, women who have found out they have cancer, women who have sick or dying children, an ill male friend for whom a lap robe was made...even our own moms! We meet every three weeks to chat and knit, talk about new projects, compare notes, discuss yarns and future recipients. Almost all of our shawls have been made from your wonderful Homespun variety. Nothing in the world is softer.

We also have a ministry group at our church, headed by "Nurse Judy" Prokopiak, that goes out to visit new moms and give them help and advice and schedule meals for the new family. We have begun knitting baby caps for their team to make a part of every package they take to the new mom and baby.

This ministry is so fulfilling - to know that something YOU made, that was prayed over by YOU with every stitch for that special person - is so appreciated and loved by the recipient. To hear that the shawl is worn daily for comfort, for love, for see a brand new baby wearing a cap that was made with love...there is nothing more rewarding than knowing we were able to help. We are able to use the talents God gave us to share His love with others. Isn't that the perfect mix?

So Common Threads stitches on...
