Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

Almost 40 years ago, I was pregnant with my first child when I went into labor at 6 months. I went to the hospital at 4 in the morning and my little boy was born.

There had just been a baby born on a soap opera at 6 months and that baby was fine! Well, I knew it had to be in an incubator so when it was not put in my arms, I understood. My husband got to see the baby and said it was trying to suck his thumb! I said "Oh my gosh! I do not have anything ready! Go to the store, get a blanket, get a pacifier..." and on and on and on. I did not know what everyone else in the family knew. Twelve hours later, they told me the baby did not make it. The first thing I told them was that was not right, the lady on the soap opera's baby made it just fine!

34 years later, I had triple by-pass surgery. I flat-lined on the table after one of the test, but luckily a doctor was just passing by (?) and brought me back. It was not my time, I kept asking God to show me what he had left for me to do.

After that I started chrocheting again. My 2nd child attempted to come out at 6 months, but this time I had to spend the last 3 months in bed, so I learned to chrochet and knit! I had made all my grandchildren afghans and other people at my daughters church started wanting these blankets for their kids. Everybody wanted a Memaw blanket!

I used the Lion Brand Homespun because it was so soft and I hated changing colors. I was then asked if I could make these blankets for the preemies at the hospital. I had 200 labels made that I sew into each one that says "Jesus loves the little children A Memaw blanket".

Preemie moms are never ready. They love the little blankets and I love making them. You never know what a little thing like a blanket will do, but I give it to God and let him do it. A lot of the mothers have come to our church with the new baby and the Memaw blanket.

I am sorry to say that we have heard that some of the babies have not made it and the Memaw blanket went with the child. We are having more and more hospitals wanting our ministry to come to their hospital.

I gotta go now -- I have to get busy.
