Backstage Knitters

Often when I am acting in a play I find myself backstage with a lot of down time. I took up crocheting in 1998 as a way to make my down time a little more productive.
I reached a point where I began feeling like I wanted to do a little more for the world around me. On a whim I contacted Seattle's Union Gospel Mission to ask them about donating knitted or crocheted goods to be distributed to the poor and homeless. The response I got was amazing. Linda from Donation Relations stressed to me how important those gifts would be to their organization.
So in late 2006, I created a project called Backstage Knitters, and invited my closest friends to join me. The response was tremendous, and I decided to open the project to the greater community, not just members of the theatre community.
Union Gospel Mission sends out rescue vans nightly to give warm items to the 2000+ people who spend the night outdoors in Seattle. Our donations are on those vans and given directly to the people. To date, we have sent three big boxes of homemade items, with a fourth to be sent soon.
