Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

How Heavenly Angels in Need was started

How did we become involved in the project or cause?

I am the founder of Heavenly Angels in Need. My story can be seen more on our website

I had 3 premature babies 1 whom passed away and miscarriage. I knew the need personally for clothing. Burial items and also from childhood abuse I knew the need for items for children in trauma. My mother was beaten in front of us children almost to death. My mission for HAIN is to help others struggling through trauma of whatever sort or having to struggle to make ends meet. We want to comfort the grieving families and reach out and help the parents who have babies or children in the hospital that are sick. I know personally as most of our volunteers do what its like to need and that makes HAIN so much stronger as we are just giving back.

How did we translate our hobbies into something special for the community?

I first started a group. I then decided to start a website, I knew to reach more people we had to buy space. Then as people joined we had items sent to me at first. Then later when HAIN started to grow we started opening stations [chapters]. Now we reach people person to person.

What Lion Brand yarn did I use?
We use it all!! We use baby stuff for premature children or our burial items. We use the bulky for chemo hats or sweaters for children. We use 4 ply for everything.
Even the eyelash type we use to decorate. HAIN also makes toys so that makes cute toys.

How many items do we make in a month or year?
Yearly we make close to probably a half million. Since we are larger its easier to do. We have volunteers from all over. As we also make memory boxes to give grieving families. We get request from hospitals everywhere and we fullfill every need requested. By hospitals or indiviuals.

How much time do we dedicate to our charity?
Everyday! We have a group site and that way we can keep in contact. So we literally have 10 to 75 posts a day just on the headquarters group. Each state also has their own group site. HAIN is dedicated in what we do!

How many people have benefited?
HAIN has reached almost every state in the united states and we are now reaching other countries. We cannot count how many we have reached. Its more then we can imagine.

What do we say to other knitters to ask for help?
We typically do not have to say much to knitters or other crafters. I find that most people who craft give to others and thats why they started in the first place. I just tell them what we do and I do not ever put pressure on anyone. I just invite them if they are interested. If they are they will come. If not then they won't. I always say even if you don't join us let someone else know about us. We also put lables on our items not to give ourselves credit. But its a way in kinda advertising which in the lnog run means more help. We find that more of our members have been through hard times and alot of our members who join were receivers of the items we may have given and seen our label and joined.
HAIN not only gives that way we pray for one another, comfort and become like family.
Has the local media reported on our projects? YES
As a matter of fact our artical will be up all year as I was nominated for a special part in several communites under the title "People who make things happen".
People we have effected?
Well we have received thank you notes. And since we have several members that were receivers. I tihnk pretty good. But for me my goal is to reach all who need. And I am just grateful we can help others in need. Our quate is "Helping Families One Angel at a Time"
