Caring and Sharing

Project Knitway

We finished off our year at Nextdoor with Project Knitway. I love the first big snow of the year with all it brings, a snow day, cozy fires, a big batch of chili and time spent with my family. One of our favorite garments in our household is a continuous scarf that I knit on my knitting machines. You can wrap up in the scarf, wear it as a shawl and stay toasty warm. I decided that everyone should have one of these scarves to keep safe and warm in, so I started my project. I'm knitting these scarves for area shelters, as many as possible. Initially I offered a 50% off coupon to my customers at my store if they donated two skeins of Homespun yarn for the scarves. The response was overwhelming. I have knit and distributed almost 80 scarves thus far and have hundreds more to knit. A good friend and knitting partner has joined me again to help with the task. The project has taken on a life of its own, one which I plan to continue as a Nextdoor community project. We welcome anyone who would like to join our effort. Over the months ahead I will reward our customers with coupons and donations in their stead when they shop at nextdoor. 2011...resolve, begin, continue what's next!
