Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

I started the Mobile, AL Threads of Love chapter just this year in honor and memory of my own 4 precious angels (Marianna 16 wks, Emma 5 wks, Amanda 5 wks, Robbie 13 wks)Robbie earned his wings on Mothers' Day 2002. The following September, I had a hysterectomy as a medical necessity. Every year I have lived with the pain of not having a baby in my arms to hold and love. This Mothers' Day, I started sewing burial gowns for angels just like mine. It's my way of helping myself heal while helping others as well.

I got my mom, Mary Williams, involved as she is the crocheter in the family. Before then, she had not crocheted in 15 years. It was like riding a bike-she never forgot. She now crochets with a group of senior citizens and they all make hats, booties and blankets for our local hospitals to send home with the healthy babies.

My sister, Gretchen Hoeft, uses Lion Brand yarn for her plastic canvas. Not to be left out when it comes to helping the babies, Gretchen not only cuts out patterns but she also makes tiny plastic canvas crosses to go in memory boxes. Gretchen just had her 2nd brain surgery. She is 32 with the mentality of a 7 yr old. She has brain aneurysms and the only option they had was to insert a silverstone clamp in the carotid artery to shut off blood flow to the brain. The first thing she wanted to do when she was able to move around after surgery was to do her crosses. Thank God, she is back to her crosses now. We all have different talents but we should use what we are blessed with to help others around us.

I know from personal experience that had I recieved some type of memento of my own angels, it would have been much easier for me to deal with.
