Caring and Sharing

Operation Coverup

I heard about MWB from a friend who is involved. Being a pensioner and unable to contribute financially I thought knitting might be something I can do.

There is a wide range of services provided by MWB for the families they minister to in Eastern Europe, and I knit anything that is helpful for people who have nothing. Squares can be sewn together to make blankets. Jumpers - knitted clothes of any sort, in fact - are needed. I don't make toys, but I believe some do.

I don't knit in a group. It just doesn't seem to work, where I live, so I knit at home. I knit to rest from other jobs, in front of the television, on the bus, in the car (when somebody else is driving!), and in any spare time I have. Occasionally, on holiday in Melbourne, I have met up with a group and it has been very enjoyable to work and chat with others. Last time there I sewed more than I knitted.

I don't aim to do a certain number of items within a certain time limit because I don't like the pressure of deadlines. I just plod along and I find I enjoy it a lot.

I usually use 8ply yarn. I find it the easiest, but sometimes I use 12 ply.

Sometimes I have seen presentations of the work in Eastern Europe. I am always interested in seeing what happens to what we make, and what other things are being done there. Sometimes someone says. 'That's the blanket we made!' and that always makes me feel happy. The newsletter also fills me in on what is being done. I feel that I am making a small contribution, but a contribution.

There isn't a lot else to say. I knit for the 'poorest of the poor' in Eastern Europe. Some people knit for the local scene, and this is good. I try to fill the gap by knitting for those further field.
