Prayer Shawl Ministry

I recently decided to re-learn how to crochet. When I went to the store I found a good instruction book, and I also found The Prayer Shawl Ministry Reaching Those in Need book. The items looked beautiful so I started that day to learn to make the Triangular Shawl. Pretty soon, I had the pattern mastered and began to ask God who needed my prayer most.

The first person was given to me and so I began. Praying and crocheting both require concentration so they go together naturally. I soon learned that with a family bustling about me that it required even more concentration so the T.V. stayed off quite a bit and the kids either tried their hands at crocheting or took out a book.

I delivered my first shawl and felt deeply satisfied that I had chosen the right color - blue to go with her beautiful white hair. I had also thought to use a soft merino wool blend for extra warmth and she was very appreciative. Her cancer treatments had left her quite sensitive to the cold air conditioning even in the summer. The experience "hooked" me into creating many shawls, blankets, dishcloth sets, etc. People love that you give them your indivdual attention and something tangible to show your time in prayer for them.

I could fill my house with all sorts of beautiful handmade things, but the items that I make for family, friends, and church family brings me more satisfaction than most people can understand. I encourage everyone to try a dose of praying and giving a gift that God himself takes part in. The experience enriches so many.

Here is an example of the scripture and prayer that I have put on many cards that I attach to my gift:

God you are our refuge and our strength, an ever present help in trouble.
Psalm 46:1

LORD, you are our rock, our fortress and our deliverer; our God is our rock, in whom we take refuge. He is our shield and the horn of our salvation, our stronghold.
Psalm 18:2

Gracious, Heavenly Father. I ask humbly that you bless ______________. May they know how much they are loved and prayed for. May this blanket from my prayer shawl ministry comfort them as a physical reminder of your shelter, peace, and spiritual sustenance. I pray these things in the name of Jesus, our deliverer, Amen.
