Caring and Sharing

Mindfulness through Fiber Arts

I am a psychologist at the VA in Savannah who started a fiber arts group as a way to reach female veterans who are having difficulties in their lives. These women, who have physical and emotional struggles due to their combat and military experiences, come together weekly to quietly enjoy the calming and meditative aspects of knitting and crochet. We have decided to make hats and scarves for the homeless veterans who will be at the annual Stand Down held in Savannah every fall. (This is a one or two day event that reaches out to people who are homeless and offers help/information about housing, benefits, jobs, community support, haircuts, legal advice, health screenings, help with paperwork, clothing, bedding, and anything else that might be donated by the community. It will reach out to hundreds of people and dozens of veterans.) Our goal was to make 50 hat & scarf sets by October but, since starting in December, we have over half that number already completed. It is a small but mighty group, numbering no more than 4 female veterans at any given time. As one member completed and turned in the first hat, she said, "There. Now I have a purpose."

I started this group because I crochet as a way to relieve stress, slow down and feel connected to the long history of women in my family who have used some type of handcraft to add to and deepen their lives. I also read Kathy Vercillo's book and was encouraged to start the group by other female caregivers.

We have used Lion Brand Homespun, Wool Ease, and Pound of Love as well as other Lion Brand yarns. We rely on donations and received two generous donations from our own Volunteer Services at VA. The media has not reported on us.

Thank you for this opportunity,
Linda Aserr
