Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

Corporate Community Service Day

At the company where I work we have a community service day each December. Our company donates our day to work at various projects such as food shelves, homeless shelters, etc.

Several years ago a girl I worked with made a suggestion. She had lost her baby girl who was born prematurely. She said all she had left to remember her by was a little blanket someone at the hospital gave her. It meant the world to her. She said she thought it would be a good community service project and although she didn't know how to knit or crochet, she would be willing to learn.

So two of us offered to teach knitting and crochet in advance of our community service day. The hospital where she had her baby offered us a room to use for the day and even gave us lunch!

We made little hats and tiny blankets and at the end of the day we brought them upstairs to the neonatal ward. We also made our friend a little hat to match her blanket as a gift in her baby girl's memory.

This set off an ongoing project of making tiny hats, blankets and also booties for little premature babies at many hospitals. I even receive items from North Dakota, Wisconsin and Arizona from my friends and relatives (I am in Minnesota).

We send them to quite a few hospitals and to parents of preemies that we hear about in other ways. I even keep a huge bin of yarn at work for lunch time knitting and classes. So many of my coworkers are young women living on budgets and they couldn't afford the yarn and needles, etc. so I have been picking up the yarn and watching for garage sales and such to buy the needles. Anyone who wants to help is then able. We use many Lion Brand yarns for our projects: Baby Soft, Homespun Baby, Pound of Love, Jamie and even Terry Spun.

I am teaching my granddaughters and nieces about the importance of giving to others. They work hard on little hats and blankets as well.

Now our knitting group has become a yearly community service project as well as a daily labor of love. We have no media coverage, just warm fuzzy feelings. We have received notes from nurses and parents telling us how much these items mean to them. We also try to brighten their holidays as well. Last December we made tiny santa and elf hats for the babies. So cute!
