Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

I recently read an article in the local newspaper "THE SANTAN SUN NEWS" in Chandler, Arizona. It was titled "Military Mom On A Mission". I contacted the Military Mom and we've become great friends. I've been crocheting since I was 12, I'm now 67. I've gone thru a lot of thread and skeins of yarn in that period of time. I started crocheting when I spent the summer with my grandmother years ago. Instead of using a crochet hook for these hats, my tool of choice is the "Knifty Knitter" from Provo Craft, found at MICHAELS and other craft stores. It comes with complete instructions. There are 4 different sizes in the set. I use the largest for the adult size hat. You can whip up a hat in about 2 hours. I use 1 skein of 4 ply and 1 skein of sport yarn to create the hat. If you use 2 skeins of 4 ply it makes the stitches too thick. You can either use 2 skeins the same color or 2 different colors for a multi-colored effect. So far I have created 60 hats for our troops. This loom is easier on the fingers also rather than using a crochet hook for hats, plus you dont have to count stitches.

I live in an adult community, SPRINGFIELD ADULT COMMUNITY in Chandler, Az. and have contacted other residents to help. I would be anxious to hear from anyone who reads my message to share projects.
