Soldier's Helmet Liners

Since 2006 I have been making soldier's helmet liners for our local Moms of Military group's Christmas care packages sent to all soldiers from our area. This year I passed the 1,000 mark in the total number of hats I have made for this effort. The group has needed 100-150 hats each November and it's a cause very dear to my heart, as my late husband was Army Airborne. I start in April and pace myself to make sure that I am making about 20 a month. I take my project bag everywhere and crochet as I wait at appointments or while riding in the car, even on quick 10 minute trips to town. My son drives just so that I can crochet. It now only takes me about 35 minutes per hat. My favorite yarn is Lion Brand's Fishermen's Wool.

Our group makes lots of different items including lap afghans for the local Veterans' Nursing Home, baby blankets for the local Pregnancy Center, and 1500 hat and scarf sets for the local food shelf's Christmas toys give away. Each member has their favorite thing and mine happens to be these soldier's helmet liners, that I donate through our Stitch 'n Give group to the MOM's group. The MOM's group lets me attend the box packing day and help with that activity too.

A photo of one of my hats and the wooden crochet hook I literally wore out is on the Laurel Hill Wooden Crochet Hook website. They did an article on me in their June 2011 e-newsletter's Giving Back section. No one had worn out one of their hooks before, but that hook had made 300 hats and 88 prayer shawls.

I've only received one thank you note from a soldier who received one of my hats in 2009, but it included a photo and I treasure that. It's not important to receive the thank you, I know that what I am doing makes a difference. I'd encourage everyone to find a local cause that could use handmade crocheted or knitted items.
