Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

I started using my knitting skills for volunteer projects when I was a stay at home mom (My mom showed me how to knit at age 8).

I saw an article about CareWear. That is an organization that provides knit baby items for hospitals. They supply lists of places, what they need and patterns. Items were small and easy to knit and places were so appreciative.

I was already knitting slippers and making laprobes for nursing homes since I saw the need at the local county nursing home. I then got into mittens and slippers for shelters. Since 9/11 I've knitted for the Ship Project which makes slippers, etc for armed service memebers on ships, in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The feedback from all these places make is so gratifying and I pleased that I can use the skills I have to make other's lives more comfortable. I was always a volunteer and this is just another way of doing it at home.

It is very true that the feeling you get from volunteering makes you feel even better about yourself. I have a stressful job and knitting is my relaxation. Lion Brand yarns are wonderful and the quality is second to none but I've had to be creative and watch rummage sales, etc. to help my limited budget.

My co-workers are so wonderful and have given me many bags of yarn. I truly would love to see more young people - both girls and boys - learn knitting as a hobby so they could benefit others and themselves. I started keeping records of what I made after I started making items for CareWear and know I am over the 1,000 mark for baby hats!

Through my interest, my sister is now knitting both for the Ship Project and baby items.
