Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

Cancer Hats, Needy, Angel Tree,

My mother-in-law(Jay) taught me how to knit & crochet when I married her son Al 42 yrs. ago. I love doing both but I love it even more when I give it to someone who really needs it.

In 1998 Jay & I started a crochet group at St. Elizabeth Ann
Seton Parish with a helping hand from blankets across America. We decided we could do that. We received permission from our priest in February 1998.
We started with parishioners donating squares, then I would go around each square with a plain color to tie them together. Six 6 months into this(Jay) passed away. She had 15 squares done and had explained to me how it should be lined up. The first year I prevailed. It was raffled at Christmas & all money went to the church.
After 16 years we now have approximately 23 people in our group. This year we made 129 hats for the Helen Graham Cancer Center.
Gave Bayard House (unwed mothers) 15 baby afghans and some hats.
Made lap-afghans for Helen Graham Cancer for those who are receiving chemo. We made hats for the Angel Tree (children whose parents are incarcerated) St Vincent de Paul,we donated 76 afghans we made to the needy in our area, along with mitten, hats, scarfs.
Plus we still make an afghan & quilt for the church raffle at Christmas. We are a diverse community of faiths.
We meet every Thursday at 1:00 in the church Hall where the magic from our fingers turn regular yarn into something someone else needs. We are so blessed and want to share that gift with others.. Our skills vary from very easy to puzzling lol... anyone can join us for as long as you like.

Thank you for letting me tell my story.
