Caring and Sharing

Angolan Orphanage

I thought I would write a quick note today. I have received your newsletter for a couple of years now, and have always found it interesting. I have done a lot of knitting and crocheting in the past, and I have used a lot of Lion Brand Yarn.

This year our family, my husband, 4 children (15, 13, 10, and 9)and myself are preparing to move to Angola Africa to start and run an orphanage/farm project. There are 2.5 million orphans in Angola due to war/disease/AIDS. Our family has been gripped with compassion for these little ones who have no mom or dad to care for them (many of them live on the streets in the larger city centers).

I was going through all of my things to sell and when I got to my HUGE treasure chest full of yarn, I had a hard time deciding what to do with it. I knew I wouldn't have room to pack all of the balls of yarn, or the time when I arrive in Angola to knit or crochet for a few years (although I will teach the orphans eventually).

A sweet lady in our church does a lot of knitting so I gave her a bunch of the yarn... and a couple of weeks later, she had delivered a baby blanket and sweater to take to the orphanage! Very thoughtful! The rest of the yarn I gave to my mother-in-law, and I expect that she will have some projects on the go already for us to take with us. What a blessing!

If anyone would like to send blankets, sweaters, hats, etc they can get more information by emailing me at we will be shipping a container when we go, but when we get there we'll have an address where it can be sent in Angola or Namibia!

Just thought I would share, and thank you for your emails...
God Bless,
Charlene Knightly
