The minister at my church sent me an e-mail telling about some seminary students who were knitting prayer shawls for people they knew who were either sick, grieving, celebrating births or weddings, etc. Our minister wondered if that was something our church congregation might be interested in doing for our congregation.

I had stopped knitting several years prior to this for various reasons but I thought it might be interesting to see if enough people would like to join a group to make prayer shawls. My inquiry was answered by about 6 people who thought it would be a good thing to do and we started, meeting once a month but knitting or crocheting steadily at home. We have now grown into about 25 people and we make many things, hats for the homeless, baby blankets and hats for a children's hospital in Hartford, CT, afghans for a hospice residence here in town, afghans, hats, scarves for a local shelter for victims of domestic violence, afghans for the Veterans Home in Connecticut and baby blankets for new babies in our church (to wrap them in the love our our church. We have named our group "The Gathering" and have been "Gathering for about a year and a half.
