My New Year's Resolutions

When I was about 5 or 6 years of age, my grandmother introduced me to the art of knitting and I was hooked. Now, retired and in my 70s, that love is still strong. I was an only child who made hundreds of sweaters, socks, mittens and caps for many of my cousins and friends as I was growing up. I even taught knitting in an adult program. I am fortunate to have a 96 year old mother living with me. About 10 years ago I decided to make a specific New Year's Resolution each year and knit 100 of a particular pattern that I would donate to a specific organization when the items were completed. There were chemo caps for cancer patients, infant caps for a local hospital, mittens for 2 school districts, caps to a church for the homeless, caps for the Women's Club Clothe the Children project, and scarves for Bosnia, to name a few. I was recognized by the Pennsylvania Women's Club in that I was one of 28 women named 'A Star Woman of 2000.' I was entered into the Pennsylvania Delta Kappa Gamma "Album of Distinction." I received recognition from the Pocono Medical Hospital Focus Magazine in two editions. I was also invited to a reception for Gift Givers. The Bangor Slater Network, an organization devoted to families in need, invited me to their celebration luncheon where I received a standing ovation when my contribution was announced. Stories of my projects were reported in two issues of the Allentown Morning Call Chronicle newspaper.
