Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

Operation School Bell

I personally became involved last year when I saw a sign outside the Assistance League Thrift Shop asking for yarn donations. I had donated clothing and household items in the past to their Thriftshop but did not realize all the good work that they do for the children and people in Boise, Idaho & Ada County. I then learned that they annually helped clothe at least 3 thousand children for each new school year with items listed below. I didn't want to just donate yarn I wanted to knit hats for the children. Last year I donated 30 plus hats and I am still knitting for the next years clothing of the children.
I use Vanna's Choice yarn by Lion and try to use the lion brand that is made is the USA also. I knit in the round and am having trouble finding another style to knit. So I continue to use the same one all the time. If you have a simple pattern for a hat that is knit in the round I would love to purchase it. It would give me an alternative to using the same one over and over again.

They also have a room filled with prom dresses for girls who cannot afford to purchase one.

Below is a copy of the Leagues' committment to the community.

Assistance League of Boise supports six community based philanthropic programs benefiting everyone from infants to adults residing in Ada County.

Since opening in 1990, Operation School Bell® has dressed in excess
of 42,000 students in brand new clothing!

Children who go to school without adequate clothing suffer low self-esteem and often have poor grades. Children (K-6 grades) are identified by Ada County public school personnel and brought to Operation School Bell® by school personnel.
These children in need are outfitted from head to toe by our caring member volunteer "personal shoppers". Students "go shopping" for brand NEW clothing with a member volunteer in our Philanthropic Center.

Each child (K-6 grade) receives:
• two pair of jeans or sweat pants
• a winter coat
• a sweatshirt
• two tee shirts
• six pair of underwear
• six pair of socks
• a hygiene kit containing personal items
• a shoe card for a new pair of shoes to be redeemed at a local store
• a book of their choice
• mittens and hats are also provided when available

The picture that I have uploaded or tried to is my granddaugher wearing one of the hats that I make and donate.
Thank you and hope that more of your yarn can be produced in the United States.
I enjoy using your yarns and love the selection of colors.
Sincerely, Priscilla Kubicki
