Gathering for Knitting and Ministry

I am writing to share in the good news of our knitting ministry The Gathering Basket. We are a small group of knitters who come together one night a month and meet at the Allen Park Presbyterian Church, Allen Park, Michigan. We share our love of knitting, spend time in fellowship together, and support five charities in the spirit and love of knitting and giving. We are a diverse group of women from ages 12, the youngest, to 80-something. We are students, teachers, homemakers, business women who enjoy each others company and believe in sharing our gifts of knitted garments in the realm of God.

We have been an organized group since May of 2003. I am the coordinator of the group and mail monthly reminders of our meetings to approx. 20 knitters in our community. On the average 12 to 15 knitters attend our monthly Gathering Basket. Our "loan-lending closet" is well supplied with yarn and needles and is always open and available to our knitters who work on projects that we give to charities. To date we have knitted 325 individual units or garments for the five charities we support.

Needless to say, Lion Brand Yarn plays an important part in all of the garments we knit for all of our charities. We know Lion Brand to be a quality yarn, both a delight to work with by our knitters and appealing to the eye as well in our finished projects.

I am proud of the many wonderful women who give of their time and talent in knitting for The Gathering Basket. At our monthly meetings, I share a story or two about the historical roots of the ancient art of knitting, along with bits and pieces of information and knitting lore. I invite interested knitters to bring their needles and yarn, their humor and storytelling, and any project they are working on. They come when they can and leave when they must. Our loan-closet is always open.

In May of 2004 our knitting ministry was highlighted in a newspaper article in the News-Herald, our local area newspaper. We consider ourselves blessed to be able to give and be a part of this important ministry which touches the lives of many people across the country and world.

Susan Hill,
The Gathering Basket Knitting Ministry.
