Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

Warm Up America

I became involved in Warm Up America through Michael's Arts & Crafts, because I've been a knitting instructor for a store that was sponsoring this event. Three years ago we started this program, and it's been a huge success. We used Lion Brand yarns including Jiffy Thick & Quick, Homespun, Woolease, Lion Boucle, and Vanna's Choice. We tried to make sure that all the yarns were washable, and Lion Brand offers many to chose from.

Each year people dropped off their squares, and I put them together. The first year we finished 10 lap blankets. I took them to a local Interfaith Network homeless shelter and dropped them off with one of the volunteers. Three days later I went back to play guitar and do folk songs for the group that was staying there. To my surprise, they were all wearing their lap blankets like shawls! They told me that "someone" had donated them, and these blankets were their favorite thing because they just knew that all these people had made the squares for them. They also said that these were such a comfort to them, because it was the only thing they could call their own at this point in their lives.

The next year the 12 finished lap blankets went to a convalescent hospital, and again were a tremendous comfort to the residents who received them. We even had one that was made in green, red and white squares of Woolease, in all different knit and crochet stitches. The woman who got it said that it would bring Christmas to her all year.

Finally, this past year the 9 lap blankets went to homeless families with the Jewish Community Center. This time I didn't get to actually see the people who received the lap blankets. However, I am quite sure that these are treasures to someone.

Anyone can get involved in this program. Just go to the Warm Up America website and start knitting or crocheting.
