Finger Puppets for the Hospital

The project I am involved in includes many members of my family, as well as family friends.

What do we do?

We knit finger puppets for the provincial Childrens Hospital. These puppets are given to the children when they have bloodwork done, have x-rays, or at anytime when they need a little something to distract them. We also give them to our local hosptial and medical centre.

The first puppets were knit many years ago when Phyllis Seaboyer (my Mom) was contacted through her Ladies Aux. group by the hospital. The hosptial had written to various groups asking them to knit puppets. Ove the years that group has knit puppets, baby sets and blankets for the hospital. Eventually the knitting stopped.

10 years ago I had a son born with a genetic disorder. We spent a lot of time at that Children's Hospital, and were given lots of finger puppets. Throgh this, the desire to start knitting puppets was re-born.

Puppets are a favorite. They use up the little bits of yarn that are left over from bigger projects. They are knit up quickly. And they bring such joy to the children.

My mother and I knit the puppets shapes, and then give them to my sister. Her daughter then sews them up and puts the faces on them. My sister knits the puppets as well. We also have a few family friends who are helping knit them as well. A young mother who is just learning to knit, an elderly lady who is recovering from surgery. We all knit puppets in our spare time, and bug other knitting friends for their scraps of yarn :)

Last fall when we had to take our son to the Hospital for some appts. we took along a garbage bag full of puppets. The timing was perfect, the volunteer office at the hospital had just run out of puppets. We filled there bin, and then some! On June 23rd Troy has to go back for more appts., and we plan to have 3000+ pupptets to deliver. We have then sewn onto yarn in strings of 100.

We need to find more knitters and yarn suppliers.

And we are running out of yarn to use.

Respectfully Submitted
Dorothy Peacock
