Caring and Sharing

Baby Afghans

I am writing this about my sister-in-law, Shirley Beaber. She is a lifetime crocheter and has started to crochet with a purpose.

We have a mutual neighbor, Bea Eaton, who is a retired nurse from the U. C. Davis Medical Center Pediatric Unit in Sacramento, California. Bea tells us that there are many newborns who go home with very little. She has been encouraging the crocheters and knitters in our community, Murieta Village, to stitch baby afghans that can be sent to the hospital so these new lives can go home with a really nice blanket that will be their own. Shirley as accepted the challenge and has been crocheting afghans for U.C.Davis for over a year. She has made more than 30 in that time. To start with, she used left-over yarns that she had from previous projects. Once that was used up, she would look for nice quality yarn that was on sale. I don't know if she has used Lion Brand yarns, but I believe that she has used Jamie Baby (in all colors) for some of her afghans. I am sorry that I don't have any pictures of her and her projects. It is rare to find her without a skein of yarn and a crochet hook, working on another baby afghan. I'm sure that there are many babies and mothers who have appreciated such a nice gift, thanks to Shirley and her crocheting.
