Lapghans for senior citizens

Several years ago, I was searching for something worthwhile to do. My daughter was grown and beginning to be on her own. Around the same time, my siblings and I were faced with having to place our mother in an Assisted Living Center. While visiting with my mom, I noticed that many people did not receive visitors. I have crocheted since I was a young teen. I decided to bring these two things together and founded "Laps of Love". Our organization makes lapghans and delivers these to nursing homes, etc. We spend some time visiting and sharing Jesus' love with the senior citizen who receives a lapghan. We are a ministry of Candlewyck Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC. We have used Homespun yarn and A Pound of Love that I am aware of, possibly others. Our group officially meets once a month, however many members work on projects at the homes. Laps of Love will be celebrating our first anniversary in September, in this short time we have given approximately 100 lapghans to seniors in nursing homes. Some of these went to Alzheimer's patients at the home my mother resides in. I have heard that they love to cuddle with the soft lapghan. The local media has reported on Laps of Love on two occassions, as a result of those reports several connections with other groups of people interested in helping have been made as well as many donations of yarn and fabric were received.
I would highly recommend to any knitter or crocheter who is looking for some way to help to get involved in a charity group such as Laps of Love. You have a talent in your crocheting and/or knitting and you can use that talent in so many ways. We have several groups of senior citizens that make lapghans for Laps of Love and they tell me that making lapghans gives them purpose and they feel like they are still a productive part of society.
