Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

*Who would have ever thought my mom’s (Kathy Silverton) small pleasure of knitting tiny hats and blankets for needy children that go home from hospitals with little or nothing to keep them warm would turn into a major knitting charity group called Stitches From the Heart.

It all started about four years ago when I read an article about babies going home with only a diaper. After I told my mom, she started knitting items for the babies whenever she had a few minutes. Right away her friends got involved. After an article was published in the local newspaper about ‘What do You do for Charity?’, she was amazed when over a hundred women contacted her to help out. Soon afterwards Stitches From the Heart was born.

Volunteers from around the country send their hand-made items to her West Los Angeles based organization, she then contacts a hospital or charity with a need and mails or delivers a bundle of lovingly made little tiny crocheted, knitted or quilted items for babies , children and families in need. You can help too. All you need is two hands powered by a very big heart.
Shane Silverton

How Many Infants have Benefited From Stitches From the Heart?

In just the first five years since Stitches was started, Stitches has donated over 161,000 hand-made warmth-giving items to over 411 hospitals charities and community centers nationwide. We are so proud of these numbers!!

What you can do to support the worthwhile efforts of Stitches?

There are three ways you can contribute to Stitches. First. As no one in the organization receives a salary, you may volunteer to purchase your own supplies and knit, crochet or quilt items for the babies. Second. If on the other hand, you want to help, but are unable to devote the time to knit, crochet or quilt, you can make a much needed financial donation. Your generous contributions help cover the costs of mailing the clothing to the hospitals throughout the United States. Third. We always welcome those who choose to do both: make hand-made items for the babies and contribute.

Is there anything else that Stitches from the Heart does?

Yes indeed. Stitches From the Heart donates yarn and supplies to many seniors, who want to knit and crochet, but cannot afford to purchase their own supplies. You see, your financial contributions will not only benefit needy newborns, but also bring an added purpose to the lives of many elderly volunteers who take great pleasure in helping these infants. What the hospitals say:

• “What a surprise and joy it was to receive your package of hand-knitted and crocheted hats, booties, blankets and outfits for our newborns! It felt like Christmas here as we went through your generous and beautiful gifts. You have no idea how grateful our mothers are to receive a new blanket or outfit to take their babies home in...often our mothers ask if they can take their babies home in the hospital shirt and blanket because they have nothing else.”
Seton Medical Center, Austin, Texas

• “At the office, on a very dismal March morning in Pennsylvania, I was suddenly awakened by a most unusual package. A collection of the most adorable hand made baby clothing and afghans from California. What a pleasant surprise and a breath of spring to receive something as special as this. To every one involved in Stitches From the Heart, I commend your hand craft talents, but more important is your “giving from the heart.”
Chambersburg Hospital

• “To all the wonderful crafters that made the lovely gifts for our babies. We thank you!! Each piece is so special. The quality of each shows that it was truly “Stitched From the Heart”. The nurses are always so happy to have something pretty to put on the baby. These things may often be the nicest things the babies will ever have. The colors help take the high tech environment and soften it to be a bit more friendly place. Once again, thank you all for the lovely gifts.” Medical University of S Carolina
