Layette Program for the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez, California

When we moved to Walnut Creek, California from New York in 1997, I became involved with the National Council of Jewish Women. Because of my passion for knitting, I took on the job of chairing the layette program for the regional hospital where we knit afghans, sweaters and caps for "our babies". I have been doing it ever since. I am very proud of our accomplishments; to date we have supplied 718 blankets, 743 caps, and 679 sweaters to the hospital.

We have many older women who love to knit and want to put their talents to use. I teach those who don't knit, I design easy sweaters for those who don't want to do complicated patterns, and serve as a resource for those who just need some brush-up in their knitting skills. National Council supplies the yarn (I do all the buying of yarn - only those yarns that are soft enough for babies; and I even write to the yarn companies telling them about our project, and have been pleasantly surprised by the amounts of yarn that they will send to us for this program).

We also knit blankets and caps for the Veterans Hospital in Martinez, CA and preemie caps for the babies at the Oakland Children's Hospital.

We have been showcased in our local community newspaper, as well as the Contra County Times. Our women love to be of service and consider knitting for the hospitals a joy. I am extremely proud of our contributions.
