Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

Project Linus

I am the coordinator for Project Linus in Sacramento, California. This is my 8th year!

I first learned about Project Linus when I read a brief article in a Southern California newspaper asking for people to make blankets for children in need. I love to crochet and have since I was 16! When I called Headquarters, they said they would LOVE to have a chapter in northern California!

Project Linus was only a year old then and just getting off the ground. Now we have over 300 chapters across the United States, all non-profit, and all staffed by volunteers who think that making blankets for sick and needy children is like "medicine for the soul."

My favorite type of Lion Brand yarn to use is the Sayelle. It has a lot of body and bounce, and comes in great washable, bright colors for children! We have approximately 35 different organizations that we distribute blankets to every month. Some of our volunteers make one blanket a year...others make six a month! There is no time limit - just a love of crocheting and knitting and for children.

Last year, our chapter donated over 2,600 blankets! We receive letters all the time from the organizations, saying what a difference the blankets have made in the children's lives!

These are kids in hospitals, foster care, homeless, or just going through a difficult time. I would encourage ALL crocheters and knitters to get in touch with their local chapter (the chapter list is at and volunteer their time. There are no meetings, no deadlines - just a desire to help. The blankets can be almost any size (we deliver to children from newborns to age 18!), and you can be as creative or as simple as you wish.

What a great way to spread your joy of knitting and crocheting around, especially when your family and friends already have enough blankets from you!

Our local newspaper put an article in their "Neighborhood" section four years ago, and that helped, but we're always looking for new ways to "spread the word."

Thank you for giving us this opportunity to tell you about Project Linus AND for having such a high quality of yarn to make these blankets!
