Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

I started the Tallis Prayer Shawl ministry in January of 2006. We knit/crochet our shawls and pray for those in chemotherapy treatment particularly, and provide prayer shawls to all who feel a need for their comfort.

We usually provide 10 shawls and about 15 chemo caps a month to various hospitals in the St. Louis/St. Charles Missouri area. We attach a card to each shawl that tells the wearer the shawl was made especially for them by (name) and that group has prayed for them. We wrap the shawl in tissue paper and place it in a gift box with our Tallis Prayer Shawl Ministry explanation taped to each box.

We have received many, many thank you notes which are shared with all our members. It always amazes us how women who are undergoing cancer treatment can take the time to write a thank you note and affirm their belief in a community that lifts them up in prayer.

Below is our Tallis Prayer Shawl Ministry explanation and some pictures of the shawls made by our members.

Agnes Bolwell

Tallis Prayer Shawl Ministry

We are a group of women from all areas of the United States and from diverse backgrounds. We are involved in this ministry because we have all had occasion to need a hug, or a prayer or a kind thought. We are wives, widows, mothers, aunts and daughters. We are women reaching out to women.

Those of us in this ministry pray the shawls will envelop the wearer both physically and spiritually, in prayer and celebration, in joy and sorrow.
We sign our names to the shawls so the wearer will know she was thought of and prayed for while it was being made.
In return, we ask that the wearer pray for or think of us that our ministry continues to be a source of comfort and strength.

May you be blessed by the LORD,
The maker of heaven and earth.
Psalm 115:15
